Purple Passion Fruit
Passiflora Edulis Sims

Passiflora edulis Sims, commonly known as purple passion fruit, is a tropical and subtropical fruit valued for its aromatic, tangy-sweet pulp. The fruit has a round to oval shape, with a thick, purple rind that wrinkles as it ripens. Inside, it contains a gelatinous, golden pulp filled with small black seeds, which are edible and add a slight crunch. The pulp is widely used in fresh consumption, juices, desserts, sauces, and cocktails. Rich in vitamins A and C, fiber, and antioxidants, purple passion fruit supports immune health, digestion, and overall well-being.
Postharvest, purple passion fruit should be stored at 7-10°C with 90-95% relative humidity, preserving freshness for up to two weeks. Unlike the yellow variety, it is slightly less tolerant to low temperatures, which can cause chilling injury and internal breakdown. The fruit produces ethylene, accelerating ripening, so controlling ethylene exposure helps maintain quality. Once fully ripened, the fruit is best kept at room temperature if consumed soon or refrigerated to extend its shelf life. Its tough rind provides natural protection, but careful handling minimizes bruising and premature wrinkling.
