Red Dragon Fruit
Selenicerus Costaricensis

Selenicereus costaricensis, commonly known as red dragon fruit or Costa Rican pitaya, is a tropical cactus fruit recognized for its vibrant red skin and deep magenta pulp filled with small, edible black seeds. Its mildly sweet, refreshing taste and striking color make it popular for fresh consumption, smoothies, desserts, and juices. The fruit is a good source of vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, particularly betalains, which contribute to its bright color and potential anti-inflammatory benefits.
Postharvest, red dragon fruit should be stored at 7-10°C with high humidity to maintain freshness for up to two weeks. While its thick skin provides some protection, careful handling is necessary to avoid bruising. Unlike some climacteric fruits, it produces minimal ethylene, meaning its ripening is not significantly affected by ethylene exposure. However, proper ventilation and moisture control are crucial to preventing mold growth and dehydration, ensuring optimal fruit quality for consumption and distribution.
